Crime cost Israel 14.4 billion shekels in 2011

Israel's economy paid the enormous sum of 14.4 billion shekels in 2011 for damages incurred by crimes, according to figures made available by the Public Security Ministry on Monday.

The figure represents 1.7 percent of the Israeli GDP.

Although the figure represents a 5.3% drop from 2010, the average level of economic damage caused by each crime rose in 2011, reaching an all-time high of 11,266 shekels per incident.

It cost the state 39,000 shekels to respond to each crime, most of which (27,500) went to managing a criminal case via police, state prosecutors, and the prisons system.

Each homicide costs the economy 2.3 million shekels, according to the figures.
