Egypt: 1000s protest in Alexandria over election results

Thousands of Egyptians gathered in a central Alexandria square on Monday to protest against the results in the first round of voting in Egypt's presidential elections.

The body overseeing Egypt's elections announced Monday that former president Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, will face off against the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi in a run-off vote in mid-June.

Many demonstrators carried posters bearing an image of Hamdeen Sabahy, a leftist presidential candidate that ended up in third place in last weeks elections, but won the majority of votes in both Cairo and Alexandria.

Protesters chanted against Shafiq's win, saying his candidacy is an affront to the revolution that ousted the very regime under which the former prime minister served, Egypt's Al-Ahram daily reported.

Protesters marched towards the Alexandria headquarters of the Egyptian military, which has run an interim government since Mubarak's ouster last February.
