Egypt draft constitution opens way to presidential poll first

CAIRO - A draft Egyptian constitution approved on Sunday says elections must take place no more than six months from the date of its ratification and opens the way for a presidential election to be held before parliamentary polls.

This marks a potential change to the political road map outlined by the army when it deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July, which stated that parliamentary elections must come first. The amended provision avoids stipulating which should take place first.

The change was announced by former Arab League secretary general Amr Moussa, chairman of the 50-member constituent assembly, as it completed its final draft on Sunday. The draft must be put to a referendum.
