Egyptian blogger sentenced to 2 years for defaming army

An Egyptian military court convicted a political blogger Wednesday to two years in prison and a fine of 200 hundred Egyptian pounds for defaming the armed forces and spreading false information.

According to Egyptian daily Al Ahram, the prosecution was able to confirm that Michael Nabil Sanad made defaming comments of the military, but was unable to prove that Nabil indeed wrote all the content on his blogging website.

Michael, a Coptic Christian with rare pro-Israel views for an Egyptian, was on a hunger strike in the run-up to the trial, which was conducted following an appeal of his three-year sentence in April by the political activist.

Michael is one of at least 12,000 civilians who have been tried since the ousting of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in February of this year, according to Amnesty International.
