Egyptian court jails 23 activists for violating protest law

CAIRO - An Egyptian court sentenced 23 young activists to three years in jail on Sunday for violating a law that forbids protesting without a permit, judicial sources said.
The activists, among them a 28-year-old lawyer with a prominent local rights organization, were arrested in June after protesting against a law passed last year that bans demonstrations held without the approval of the police.
They were also found guilty of blocking off a road during the protest, among other charges. The court fined those sentenced 10,000 Egyptian pounds($1,400).
