Eini postpones resignation as Histadrut chairman

Histadrut Labor Federation Chairman Ofer Eini on Tuesday postponed his planned retirement from the role, citing uncertainty in succession.
"Taking note of the repercussions of a situation in which the Histadrut may be without an elected chairman, a condition that will harm the Histadrut's ability to optimally conduct its struggles for Israel's workers, and out of responsibility for the working public that does not allow leaving the Histadrut without a chairman to lead it in a difficult period such as this, I've decided to delay by departure," Eini said.
When Eini announced his retirement in November, he made clear that his choice of successors was Avi Nissankoren, chairman of the Histadrut’s Trade Union division. Nissankoren's path to an easy vistory, however, has since been blocked by Labor MK Eitan Cabel, who hoped to take the position himself.
Cabel lost his case against the Histadrut to the Tel Aviv District Court, but an appeal to the Supreme Court on January 22 included a directive to postpone elections until after it reached a decision.
Eini, who was supposed to step down on February 1, decided to stay in the role to avoid a leadership vacuum while the contest remained underway. A decision is expected in mid-February.
