Embassy employee in Iraq charged with embezzling

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — A Jordanian citizen who was working for the State Department at the US Embassy in Baghdad has been charged with stealing more than $237,000 in US government funds.
Thirty-six-year-old Osama Esam Saleem Ayesh was arrested in August. He had been a shipping and customs supervisor at the embassy when investigators received a tip from an Iraqi businessman that Ayesh had been embezzling funds.
According to an affidavit, Ayesh caused $237,236 in taxpayer money to be sent to a Jordanian bank account he controlled between 2008 and June 2010.
Ayesh was indicted by a federal grand jury on Alexandria on Friday and is currently being held while he awaits trial.
