Energy minister denounces High Court ruling on gas deal

Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, reacting to the High Court's striking down of the government's gas deal, said on Sunday: "This is a poor decision with a negative impact on the development of the gas sector, for energy security, and the Israeli economy. The loss of revenue to the State of Israel and its citizens may be severe, and possibly irreversible."
"With all due respect to the Supreme Court, I think this kind of intervention in the government and Knesset decisions would not have happened in other Western democracies in a similar situation," he said.
Opposition politicians acclaimed the decision, with Zionist Union MK Shelly Yachimovich saying: "The Supreme Court decision is historic and dramatic. Netanyahu's stability clause which he cooked for the gas companies was devoid of any logic and was unconstitutional."
"Despite threats and pressures, the justices chose today to defend the separation of powers and the rule of law, stopping the relentless beneficial backing to the gas tycoons."
