Erdan nominates new head of Israel Prison Service

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan has nominated a female officer to be the Chief Commissioner of the Israel Prison Service, the minister announced in a statement on Monday.

Commissioner Ofra Klinger’s nomination was examined by the Attorney General and now must be checked by the Turkel committee, which vets appointments of senior public officials. The appointment will then be passed onto the government for approval.

Klinger, aged 53, is an attorney and a married mother of three from Yehud who has held a number of command positions in her 26 years in the organization, including head of the prisoners affairs department and head disciplinary prosecutor and chief assistant to the head prosecutor of the IPS.

Erdan on Monday referred to Klinger as an excellent officer with great knowledge and experience with the organization.”

In February, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “perhaps the time has come to see a female national chief of police,” following a series of sexual abuse scandals in the organization.
