Erdan wants to personally protest plans for new coal-fired power plant

Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) has requested to personally address the national infrastructures committee currently debating plans for a new coal-fired power plant in Ashkelon. Erdan, a native of Ashkelon, has been a vociferous opponent of the plan, and his first act as the new environment minister was to release a statement listing several reasons why the plant should not be built. The committee has been accepting public objections to the plan for the past month, and environmental organizations, MKs, and others have been assiduous in collecting thousands of objections and presenting them to the committee. Erdan believes the pollution cost of the plant would be too high and that Israel has enough alternative methods to produce electricity, especially in light of the recent gas finds off the Haifa coast. He has been advocating energy efficiency and more efficient use of current generators as alternatives.
