Erekat: Abbas, not Arab League will ask UN for recognition

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will personally ask the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Saturday, Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported. Earlier this week, reports indicated that the Arab League would present the resolution to the UN on behalf of the Palestinians.
The reason for Abbas personally appearing in the United Nations is so as not to undermine the position of the PLO, whose executive committee Abbas is the president of, as the sole representative of the Palestinian people, Ma'an reported.
Erekat also slammed the United States's position on the issue of statehood, saying that there is no reason for the US to use its UN Security Council veto to stifle Palestinian efforts for statehood.
