Ex-Lebanese minister gets 4.5 year jail sentence for Syria-linked plot

BEIRUT - Former Lebanese minister Michel Samaha was sentenced to 4-1/2 years in prison on Wednesday for smuggling explosives from Syria and plotting to assassinate Lebanese politicians and Syrian militants, a Lebanese judicial source said.
Samaha, who has been in detention since August 2012, was tried by a military court on charges related to a plot devised with Syria's security chief Ali Malmuk.
Samaha confessed to the charges last month, giving details of the plans.
