Ex-PM Olmert released from jail after serving 16 months for corruption charges

Former prime minister Ehud Olmert was released from prison early Sunday morning after spending 16 months behind bars for a series of corruption charges including fraud, bribery and obstruction of justice.
His sentence was shortened by a third on Thursday in a surprising decision by the parole board that came despite a new probe into alleged leaking of classified documents by the former premier. It was initially reported that the state prosecution would repeal the decision, but it declined to, allowing Olmert to end his prison term earlier than expected.
After leaving the Ma'asiyahu Prison in Ramle, the 71-year-old Olmert is expected to head straight to his private residence in Tel Aviv.
