Family of Egged driver ruled to have committed suicide calls for thorough probe

The family of an Egged bus driver from east Jerusalem found hanged to death in what was ruled a suicide, sent a letter to Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch on Tuesday, demanding his office carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances behind his death.

Yussuf al-Ramuni, 32, was found dead on the evening of November 16th, 2014, hanging inside of his bus at the depot in Har Hotzvim, an area of northwestern Jerusalem close to Jewish settlements and Arab neighborhoods.

In a letter submitted by their attorney, the family accused law enforcement officials of not carrying out a thorough investigation and of ignoring their attempts to contact them.

An autopsy of al-Ramuni, which was attended by a Palestinian pathologist sent on behalf of his family, ruled that the cause of death was suicide. The Palestinian pathologist later disputed that claim, and there were reports in the Palestinian media that al-Ramuni was lynched by “Jewish settlers.”

Anger over his death led to a short strike by Arab Egged workers.

The death also inflamed tensions across Jerusalem and the Arab sector, and is believed to have partly inspired the two Palestinians who attacked a synagogue in the Har Nof neighborhood on November 18th, killing five people.
