President Reuven Rivlin met on Sunday with Miriam Baumel, the mother of Zecharia Baumel, one of the three soldiers still missing in action from the battle of Sultan Yacoub during the 1982 Lebanon War. Mrs. Baumel came to ask Rivlin for his diplomatic cooperation, to assist in her continued efforts to locate her son and bring him home. Osna Haberman, Zecharia’s sister, who accompanied her mother, told The Jerusalem Post, “The map of world politics is changing. We came to ask Mr. Rivlin to assist us, now that new opportunities to find my brother have opened up.” The president promised to help achieve the return of the three soldiers through diplomatic channels, she said. “We need to bring home these boys for the sake of every soldier and every mother in Israel. Israel should follow through on its policy of not leaving soldiers in the battlefield,” Haberman said she told the president.
