Fay strengthens to Category 1 hurricane in Atlantic

Tropical Storm Fay strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic on Sunday, but was expected to weaken soon, the National Hurricane Center said.

Fay had top sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph), said the Miami-based hurricane center, which added that the storm was expected to weaken below hurricane status on Sunday night. Fay was about 290 miles (465 km) northeast of Bermuda and moving toward the east-northeast.

The storm earlier swept past Bermuda, drenching the British territory in the Atlantic with winds gusting to hurricane force, the hurricane center said.
