Flames still raging in northern Israel near Lebanese border

A fire broke out on Thursday in the northern city of Kiryat Shmona near the Lebanese border, in the middle of an extensive heatwave ongoing throughout Israel, Israeli media reported.

Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) stated Thursday night that the fire spread to the forests of the Naftali mountains. Their assessment is that over 500 acres of forest have burned down, some of which suffered fires in 2006 as well as a result of the Second Lebanon War.

Several streets have been evacuated and citizens were requested to stay within their homes and shut windows to prevent smoke inhalation.

Fire extinguishing planes are at the site.

In addition, the IDF evacuated soldiers from a post on the Lebanese border when the flames invaded the army base, Ynet reported Yoav Zitun tweeted on Thursday evening.
