Former Jlem police chief fired in wake of sex crimes indictment

Minister of Public Security Yitzhak Aharonovich and National Police Chief Inspector General Yochanan Danino on Monday terminated former Jerusalem Police Chief Nisso Shaham in the wak of sex crimes indictment issued two weeks earlier against him.

In August Shaham was asked to resign from his position by senior police officials but because of the lack of an indictment against him, the decision was not yet made to fire him.

The indictment issued this month by the Justice Ministry’s police investigation includes charges of sexual assault, sexual harassment, fraud, and breach of trust.

The case revolves around allegations made by eight different low-ranking female police officers, who accused Shaham of exploiting his senior position in order to have sexual relations with them, including acts that were against their will. He is also accused of sexually harassing a number of the officers.

When the indictment was issued, his attorney Boaz Ben-Tzur said that they will base their case on whether or not the contact between Shaham and junior female offices was illegal or not.
