France: Iran's arrest of academic a political move

A young French academic detained in Iran is the latest victim of political tensions between Iran and the West, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Wednesday. Speaking to France-Info radio, the foreign minister said that he had spoken with his Iranian counterpart by telephone at length about the detention of Clotilde Reiss, and was repeatedly asked why she attended an Iranian opposition protest. Reiss was arrested July 1 as she was about to leave Iran after five months of studying and teaching French, and accused of espionage. Iranian authorities said she took photos of a protest and sent them over the Internet.
