France's Syria envoy returns to post after recall

PARIS - France's ambassador to Syria, recalled in mid-November after an escalation of violence there, has returned to his post, foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said on Wednesday.
Ambassador Eric Chevalier went back to Damascus on Monday, three weeks after his recall to Paris for consultations, Valero said.
France, the first Western state to recognize Libya's opposition, has been championing the cause of pro-democracy protesters in Syria where civil unrest began nearly nine months ago.
US Ambassador Robert Ford, who was pulled out six weeks ago due to threats to his safety, is also returning, a US official said on Tuesday.
