French soldier killed in Afghanistan

France's government said on Tuesday that a French soldier was killed in a gunfight with terrorists in eastern Afghanistan.
President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said the soldier died Tuesday after Islamists attacked an Afghan army convoy escorted by French troops into the Alasay valley in Kapisa province.
Sarkozy said that France remains undaunted in its role to help stabilize Afghanistan. Some 3,750 French troops are now deployed in and near Afghanistan as part of the NATO mission in the country.
France has lost 40 troops in Afghanistan since 2001. French troops are deployed mainly in Kapisa and the Surobi district north and east of Kabul.
