French tourist kidnapped in southern Pakistan

A French tourist was kidnapped in southern Pakistan on Saturday, according to the French Foreign Ministry. A statement Saturday from the Foreign Ministry said officials at the French Embassy in Islamabad were working to resolve the situation. It did not provide any further details. A Pakistani police official told The Associated Press the French tourist was taken at gunpoint from a village in the southern Baluchistan province. Dalbandin district police chief Mohammad Yasin said gunmen halted two vehicles carrying tourists and nabbed the French citizen. Speaking Saturday in a telephone interview, he said it was not immediately clear who was behind the abduction. Baluchistan has long been the scene of a low-level insurgency by nationalist groups.
