Gilad Schalit receives honorary Roman citizenship

Rome has given honorary citizenship to captured IDF soldier Gilad Schalit, who has been held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip for the past three years. Schalit's father, Noam received the honor at a city hall ceremony Wednesday. A giant photo of the soldier hung in the piazza, with the words "Rome wants its citizen Gilad Schalit free" - a sentence repeated by Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno at the evening ceremony. The city council vote to give Schalit honorary citizenship comes a week after the third anniversary of his capture by terrorists in a cross-border raid from Gaza into Israel. The city of New Orleans recently bestowed the same honor on Schalit.
