Gov't authorizes bill to suspend corrupt mayors from office

Mayors who are indicted for serious crimes will be suspended from their position, according to an Interior Ministry Bill authorized by the government Sunday.
Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar's told ministers that the proposal "reflects the appropriate balance between integrity and faith in local government and the democratic aspect of directly voting for mayors and the right to elect and be elected."
The legislation is expected to be brought to a first vote in the Knesset this week and comes a month after three mayors who were indicted on corruption charges were reelected.
