Gov't to allocate NIS 500m to curb coastal erosion

The Cabinet approved on Sunday a plan to establish a network of parks along the Mediterranean Sea to stop the dangerous erosion of coastal escarpment, at a cost of around NIS 500 million, the Prime Minister¹s Office announced. By protecting approximately 13.1-km. worth of cliffs in mainly the Netanya, Herzliya and Ashkelon areas, an inter-ministerial committee expressed hopes that the work would save lives and also provide increased space for park play and beach bathing.

"Rehabilitating the coastal escarpment will expand beach areas, which will remain open to the public and facilitate the safe use of the escarpment areas," said Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan.

The plan is to channel sand to the beach areas, construct breakwaters and reinforce the slopes of the cliffs, according to the Prime Minister¹s Office.

"We have made an important decision," Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said. "This is a complex problem since collapse of the escarpment is a continuing process. After many years of ignoring the problem, this government is acting and is investing hundreds of millions of shekels in order to prevent the escarpment from eroding, prevent harm to human life and allow the public to safely use Israel's beaches."
