A private security official said forces guarding an offshore oil platform in Nigerian waters clashed with five gunmen riding in a boat.
The official said no injuries were reported in the high-seas gunfight just after dawn Tuesday near the installation operated by the local joint venture of French oil giant Total SA.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to company prohibitions on dealings with the news media. Total wasn't immediately available for comment.
The Nigerian military is targeting terrorist camps in its largest operation in years against the region's myriad armed gangs.
