Police officials in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul say gunmen have killed the director of the city's crime lab after ambushing his car.
The attack appears to be part of a wave of targeted killings of security personnel and government workers in Baghdad and elsewhere. The bombings and shootings have been blamed on Sunni insurgents.
Police officials say gunmen blocked the car of Col. Mohammed Aziz near his home on Tuesday and opened fire. The officials say the assailants used firearms fitted with silencers.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.
