High Court of Justice delays demolition order against synagogue in Givat Ze’ev

The High Court of Justice postponed a destruction order against the Ayelet Hashahar synagogue in the settlement of Givat Ze’ev that was scheduled to be knocked down on Monday.

The High Court originally ordered in July 2014 that the building be knocked down, after the NGO Yesh Din brought a legal petition on behalf of Palestinian plaintiffs who claimed that the land on which the synagogue was built belongs to them. Leaders of the synagogue claim that they paid for the land in full.

Economy Ministry Arye Deri was informed of the pending destruction last Wednesday and liaised with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in order to postpone the destruction order.

According to the agreement that was reached on Sunday, the synagogue will be closed down for six months so that the leaders of the community will have time to arrive at an agreement with the Palestinian plaintiffs.

Organizers of a planned protest at the synagogue on Sunday evening against the destruction said the rally would still take place but that it would be turned into a thanksgiving ceremony, and that prayers would be said for the total cancellation of the destruction order.
