High Court orders review of 'starving mother' ahead of possible arrest

The High Court of Justice on Wednesday ordered parole services to evaluate the haredi mother suspected of starving her three-year-old child, and to assess the potential danger she may pose to her children, in preparation for her possible arrest. In doing so, the court accepted an appeal by prosecutors and overturned a decision by the Jerusalem District Court, which on Friday had refused to order such a review. The court had also rejected the prosecution's demand to order the woman to serve the remainder of her house arrest away from her Mea She'arim home and her children. The terms of the woman's arrest will be determined upon submission of the review by parole services. Some in the Eda Haredit organization have threatened to resume riots in Jerusalem should the woman's arrest terms be tightened. The child who was allegedly abused has remained in the care of relatives, where he has been since he was discharged from the hospital.
