High Court rules Tel Aviv supermarkets to remain open on Shabbat

Israel's High Court ruled Thursday morning that supermarkets in Tel Aviv will remain open on Shabbat. In its ruling the court overturned an appeal by the Association of Tradesmen and Independent Business Owners, which has fought a campaign to force large grocery chains such as AM:PM and others to close on Shabbat because opening contravened the law and represented unfair competition for independent stores that elect to close on the Sabbath.
The ruling was the last read out by outgoing Supreme Court President Miriam Naor.
