Histadrut to announce general strike over contract workers

The Histadrut Labor Federation on Monday threatened a general strike over the government's use of contract workers, who often receive fewer benefits and have less job stability than salaries workers.
Histadrut Chairman Avi Nissankorn called a Tuesday press conference to lay out his demands from the Finance Ministry, which he accuses of scuttling negotiations on the issue, and set a date for a general strike.
A general strike can seriously disrupt the Israeli economy, as it affects everything from ports to public transport to schools. In recent labor disputes, the Histadrut effectively used the threat of a general strike to cinch a deal before the strike was set to begin.
