Hundreds protest against UK military action in Syria

A large protest took place in London on Saturday (December 12) urging the government to stop its airstrikes in Syria.

'Stop bombing Syria' signs were plentiful, as hundreds of protesters took to the streets of the British capital to make their voices heard, in a rally organized by the Stop the War coalition.

The protesters gathered at BBC Broadcasting House in London and marched to Downing Street.

The Socialist Party supplied an open microphone for the event, with over a dozen speakers lining up to voice their anger.

Left-wing political activist, Lindsey Green, said, "We are being accused of all these things because we are an effective anti-war movement and we are determined to stop the bombing of Syria."

Other speakers praised the leader of Britain's opposition Labor Party, Jeremy Corbyn for writing to his colleagues before UK airstrikes began saying he could not support the case for military action.

French President Francois Hollande had urged the British to join the French in carrying out airstrikes against ISIS in Syria. He made the appeal two weeks after the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, which killed 130 people in the French capital.

British lawmakers approved the bombing of Islamic State targets in Syria on December 2. Hours after that approval, the Royal Air Force struck the oilfields that Cameron's government said are being used to fund attacks on the West.
