In phone conversation, Bashar Assad consoles Nasrallah over costly Golan strike

Speaking on the phone with Hezbollah Chief Hassan Nasrallah, Syrian president Bashar Assad consoled the militant leader after the recent strike on it's convoy in the Golan, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Rai reported Tuesday.

Killed in the cross-border hit, an operation suspected by Hezbollah to be the doing of Israel, was Jihad Mugniyeh, as well as 11 other figures, six of whom were Iranian officers and soldiers, including two generals with some 40 years of battlefield experience.

The loss of Mugniyeh, the son of Hezbollah's former chief Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in Damascus in 2008, is considered to be a significant blow to the embattled Hezbollah.

The Lebanese Shia group, an Iranian proxy and avowed foe of Israel, has been mired alongside the Syrian army in its war against rebel and Islamist factions in much of Syria's eastern provinces.
