In sign of thaw, Egyptian, Iranian diplomats meet

In a sign that tensions between Iran and Egypt have begun to thaw, the foreign ministers of both nations have met three times in the past week, the two countries said on Tuesday. Iran's foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, has been in Egypt since Sunday for a summit of nonaligned countries. An Iranian diplomat said that Mottaki's talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, have been "positive and cordial." Egypt has long accused Iran of meddling in Arab conflicts. It wants Iran to end its support for Shi'ite militants in Iraq, Hizbullah guerrillas in Lebanon and the Palestinian group Hamas. Iran has been pushing for improving ties between the two countries. Formal diplomatic ties were severed in 1979 when Egypt signed a peace deal with Israel.
