Indonesian President Joko Widodo arrives in Australia

Indonesian President Joko Widodo arrived in Sydney on Saturday for his first official visit to the country.

Widodo arrived to rainy conditions at Sydney's Kingsford Smith airport before planned meetings with Australian business leaders and the New South Wales state premier Gladys Berejiklian.

He is due to meet with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull for one-on-one talks on Sunday.

The primary focus of the visit is economic, with talks set to touch on tourism, mining, cyber security, terrorism and the finalization of a free trade deal.

Widodo was due to visit Australia in November last year but cancelled the trip after protests led by hardline Muslims erupted in the capital Jakarta.

Indonesia and Australia have a history of patchy ties and Widodo's visit comes less than two months after Indonesia's military suspended cooperation because of "insulting" teaching material found at an Australian base.

The material suggested that Indonesia's Papua province should be independent and mocked the nation's state ideology.

However, both countries were keen to stress the strength of the bilateral relationship in the lead up to the visit.
