Iran tries 12 suspects in protester prison deaths

TEHERAN, Iran  — Iran's official news agency on Tuesday reported that atrial has begun of 12 suspects in the deaths of three anti-governmentprotesters tortured in prison in the post-election turmoil.

The IRNA report did not identify any of the suspects, saying the judge has banned reporting details of the trial.

InJanuary, a parliamentary probe found a former Teheran prosecutor, SaeedMortazavi, responsible for the torture death of the three in Kahrizakdetention center in the capital. There has been no word of any actionto punish Mortazavi so far and he currently heads a government bodytasked with fighting smuggling of goods.

Iran's judiciary charged12 officials at Kahrizak — three of them with murder — in 2009, a fewmonths after the death of the three in July.
