Israel appoints new top firefighter

Brig.-Gen. Dedi Simchi was appointed the new commissioner of Israel’s Fire and Rescue Services on Monday. Speaking at the Fire and Rescue Services headquarters in Rishon Lezion, Simchi called his new role a “tremendous responsibility.”
The Fire and Rescue Services has been without a commissioner after the previous one, Shahar Ayalon, left in May.
Simchi, 52, previously served as chief of staff of the IDF Home Front Command, Southern District commander of the Home Front Command, commander of the National School of Search and Rescue and the IDF’s military attaché to China.
“Weighty changes occurred and are occurring at this time that require national attention to homeland security,” Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said at Fire and Rescue Services headquarters on Monday, “It is important to look for the gaps, and continue to improve, strengthen and intensify. I trust the incoming firefighting Commissioner Dedi Simchi to lead the service in the face of future challenges.”
