Israel Post introduces ‘Rachel’s Tomb’ stamp

With the current Torah readings from the Book of Genesis, the Israel Postal Company Philatelic Service chose to issue a timely postage stamp – on the burial place of the matriarch Rachel. The NIS 5 stamp, designed by Osnat Eshel, shows the famous domed site near Bethlehem. The location south of Jerusalem has been known for 1,700 years and was covered with a building in the 17th century.

In 1841, Sir Moses Montefiore added another room to it. It was turned into a fortress in recent years due to terrorist violence against those praying there, nonetheless hundreds of thousands visit the site every year.
