Israel Post may face greater competition

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his capacity as Communications Minister, will be able to open the mail market to competition, according to a bill the Knesset approved in a first reading overnight Monday.
The bill will allow competition in delivering mail that weighs under 500g and costs under NIS 5.4 to send, but companies will have to obtain a license or permit to do so. Companies delivering heavier or more expensive mail does not need a license or permit.
The communications minister will also be allowed to take action against licensed mail delivery services that act to block completion.
