Israel railways cancels various rush hour trains after 41 drivers call in sick

A long list of afternoon rush hour trains were canceled on Wednesday due to the fact that 41 train drivers had not reported to work that day due to alleged illness, Israel Railways said. Among the trains canceled for this time period include one on the Tel Aviv to Modi'in line, one from Haifa Hof Hacarmel to Akko, five from Hof Hacarmel to Kiryat Motzkin, one from Akko to Hof Hacarmel and five from Kiryat Motzkin to Haifa Hof Hacarmel.
Despite the claims of illness, Army Radio reported – and an Israel Railways spokesman later confirmed – that some of the drivers had been seen by the company management playing football, presumably taking a vacation following new work arrangements on the train. The management issued letters to the employees urging them to return to work, the spokesman said.
