Israeli Supreme Court Justice Zilbertal to step down early - in 1 year

Supreme Court Justice Zvi Zilberthal announced on Thursday that he will step down from the top court on April 17, 2017, five years early.

At that point, Zilberthal will be age 65, whereas justices are not required to retire before they reach age 70 and rarely retire early.

Zilberthal first became a Jerusalem Magistrate's Court judge in 1990, rising to the district court in 2000 and to the Supreme Court in 2012.

No explanation was given other than it was a "personal decision." Supreme Court President Miriam Naor and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked expressed sadness about the decision, though for Shaked this will be her first chance as justice minister to start to try to reshape the court with a conservative appointee.
