Israelis take first place prize in world birding competition

An Israeli ornithology team led by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel took home first place in the World Series of Birding competition's Cape May category, identifying the most bird species in a 24-hour time span in the southern New Jersey country on Saturday.

In the competition, organized by the New Jersey Audubon, some 80 teams set out on a 24-hour treasure hunt to identify the highest number of bird species during the time period. The SPNI Champions of the Flyway team identified 157 species, topping the rankings in that category. For birds identified statewide, the Israeli team came in seventh place.

Members of the SPNI team included Dan Alon, Amir Balaban, Jonathan Meyrav, Tom Reed and Noam Weiss. The competition raised more than $137,000 for conservation projects worldwide, according to the New Jersey Audubon.
