Japan to start nuke fuel removal from Fukushima by 2015

TOKYO - The Japanese government said on Tuesday that it will start to remove nuclear fuel from spent fuel pools at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant by 2015 at the latest.

It also said it will consider by January a schedule for some 80,000 residents evacuated from around the plant to return, a government official told reporters.

Tokyo Electric Power Co , the operator of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, crafted in April a two-stage time-line and set a goal of bringing the reactors to a state of "cold shutdown," where the uranium at the core is no longer capable of boiling off the water used as a coolant.
