Jewish leaders blast formation of Iran-Argentina AMIA c'tee

Leaders of the local Jewish community, as well as their counterparts in the United States and Israel, expressed outrage on Thursday over a contentious 131 to 113 vote in Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies ratifying a Memorandum of Understanding with the Islamic Republic of Iran which would pave the way for a joint investigation of the 1994 bombing of a Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires.

The ratification comes a week after the Argentinian Senate also voiced its approval of the MoU.

Officials in Argentina, Israel and the United States have previously blamed the attack against the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina building, in which 85 people were killed, on the Iranian regime. In 2006, Argentinian prosecutor Alberto Nisman officially accused former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani, among others, of ordering the attack, and claimed that the Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah carried it out on Iran’s behalf.
