The Jerusalem Municipality announced on Wednesday that the Har Hatzofim tunnels that lead from Jerusalem to the Jordan valley will be renamed to honor singer Naomi Shemer.
The new name for the tunnels will be dedicated in a ceremony next week. The naming committee of the municipality discussed a number of options for commemorating the famous singer and composer of "Jerusalem of Gold," including the Mahane Yehuda market and the Jerusalem forest. The committee, along with Shemer's children, decided on naming the tunnels after Shemer because they provide the first glimpse of the Old City for many visitors to Jerusalem. The naming ceremony will be attended by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and Shemer's daughter, Halleli Shemer.
