Jordanian official talks of 'Jordan on both sides of river'

For the first time since King Hussein's renouncement of the West Bank, a Jordanian official has referred to a unified Jordanian state on both sides of the Jordan river, Israel Radio reported Wednesday.
Tahir al-Masri, Leader of the Jordanian Senate, used the expression in a speech for a ceremony commemorating Jordan's independence day, which was presided by King Abdullah II and more than a thousand guests.
King Hussein has renounced Jordan's claims to the West Bank in 1998, and Masri's commentary marks the first public reference to the issue since then coming from such a high political level.
