Justice Ministry starts search for head of new oversight committee

The Justice Ministry on Monday announced the formation of a search committee to hire the first head of the new inspector division empowered to oversee and criticize the state prosecution's work.
The division was debated and fought over for years and until recently had been blocked by opposition from Head State Prosecutor Moshe Lador.
In recent months, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein arrived at a compromise with Lador to allow the initiative to move forward.
The new division will have strong oversight and criticism powers and the new head will receive a one-time six year term to insulate him from outside interference.
At the same time, the new division will only review decisions, such as whether the prosecution was wrong to open or close a case, after the case in question is concluded in order to avoid direct interference with prosecutor's ability to manage their cases in real-time.
