Knesset committee approves bill to expand student grants for needy families

The Labor, Welfare and Health Committee on Monday unanimously approved a bill for a second and third reading to increase the number of needy parents receiving student grants for their children by the National Insurance Institute.
The bill, proposed by MK Merav Ben-Ari (Koolanu), seeks to provide needy parents - single parents, families eligible for income supplements, people with disabilities, and families with four children or more – student grants by the NII for children through 12th grade.  Families fitting the criteria will receive NIS 1,003 per year for children of all ages – for a total cost of NIS 28 million.
To date, the law only provides grants for students up to 9th grade, with families receiving NIS 850 for children in grades 6-9 and NIS 1,500 for children in grades 1-5.
