Knesset c'tee passes Bishara Law to 2nd, 3rd readings

The Knesset Control Committee on Tuesday passed the Bishara Law in an eight-to-one vote, transferring the bill to its second and third readings.

The proposed law would block the transfer of salaries or other funds to current or former MKs if they do not agree to be investigated or tried for committing criminal offenses.

The law also blocks former MK Azmi Bishara (Balad) from receiving any more money from the state, after MKs learned that since he fled the country over three years ago, he has received over NIS 500,000 in pension and “adjustment” payments.

Meretz head MK Haim Oron voted in opposition of the bill.

The law was proposed by MK Israel Hasson (Kadima) and former Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) head MK Yariv Levin (Likud).
