Knesset speaker lauds UNESCO chief for voicing opposition to draft proposal on Western Wall

Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein spoke to UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova on the phone Tuesday night, thanking her for voicing opposition to the proposal to declare the Western Wall as a Muslim holy site that is part of the Al-Aksa Mosque.
Edelstein told Bokova that Israel appreciates her standing up for historic truth and said her words could prevent an escalation of violence.
Bokova's stance reflects the values of UNESCO and prevented turning the organization into an arena for unbridled attacks against Israel, he added.
Following the conversation, Edelstein said the resolution showed ignorance and hatred.
"This was another of many attempts to rewrite history," Edelstein stated. "The international community must condemn the proposal and stand with Israel, which believes in free access to holy sites for all religions."
